Update on Steve: In Transition
Though it seems impossible, our Steve has only weeks to live. He was placed in hospice care on July 2 and is now in bed full-time. Thankfully, he hasn’t been in pain throughout his cancer ordeal, and he continues to be pain-free.
Steve is sleeping a lot and eating a little bit. He’s indulging in the foods he avoided for all the years after his diabetes diagnosis: jelly donuts, as much fruit as he wants, custard-filled croissants. Any weight he had left has dropped off him, he is skeletal now.
It is very evident that his spirit is growing larger as his body shrinks. He has spent time calling and visiting with friends and family, telling them he loves them and saying goodbye. He is pouring himself out until the very end. He knows that relationships are what count.
Steve is unafraid to leave this world - he believes earth is but a shadow of our real home, where he will meet Jesus face to face. He prayed today, giving a sacrifice of praise: “You’re good, God, I give you my life. Praise Jesus, praise Jesus, praise Jesus.” In the midst of his dying time his prayer was pure surrender and connecting to God in that thin place between earth and heaven. He is my hero.
“I lift my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
Psalm 121
